This past weekend, I did some lumberjack work at the cottage, to work on one of the birch trees that was felled last year<\/a>, but which never quite made it into this year’s operations due to a fallen tree due to a hurricane<\/a>, and a general lack of free space in my wood shed. Yeah, a hurricane, in Quebec, go figure<\/a> (here’s my archive<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be clear and as a reminder to myself, in the first post<\/a>, I did mention (almost in passing) that some of the wood from a third tree<\/a> that the real lumberjack trimmed was indeed cut up and piled up in the wood shed<\/a>, as opposed to “the tree that fell during the hurricane completely displaced all the previously ready wood to be cut up.<\/a>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This weekend was the testing grounds for my gas chainsaw that got expensively serviced this summer<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n

Some of the work that made the work so expensive was that the chain bar and the chain were replaced — hence the “Beaver” brand on the chain bar. As such, the old chain bar and old chain were returned to me, and I haven’t thrown them out, at least not yet:<\/p>\n\n\n

Here’s a small can of premium pre-mixed gas I bought a couple of years ago, and I started using this weekend, at least as a mix with the old gas mix I still have on hand to get rid of it:<\/p>\n\n\n

I have also been using Stihl-branded biodegradable chain oil for years, in the hopes of reducing the contamination on my property a bit:<\/p>\n\n\n

Once I fired up the chainsaw, it worked like a charm cutting the wood — especially with a new, factory sharpened sawing chain!<\/p>\n\n\n

Here is the trunk, cut into sections of four logs for the fireplace — the pre-cuts for which can be seen on the left:<\/p>\n\n\n

This is the “first” section of four logs, which is also the heaviest, being the lowest part of the tree and the widest, and after the “second” section had been moved away toward the wood shed …<\/p>\n\n\n

Having had a bit of amusement for the afternoon, having somewhat developed a few sore muscles, and having a cooking project to which to attend, I stopped for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following day, I took out my Ryobi battery-powered chainsaw, with a 7.5Ah battery borrowed from my lawn mower:<\/p>\n\n\n

The “first” section, the heaviest one, was cut into two, two log lengths, because I found said section of the trunk so heavy that even rolling it, let alone raising one end in order to pile it against the wood pile, was extremely difficult:<\/p>\n\n\n

The two pieces and the rest of the cut up sections were moved to the wood shed, leaving the area where the tree trunk had been empty:<\/p>\n\n\n

… while nearby, the other birch tree that had been felled last year …<\/p>\n\n\n

… and the crowns from the two trees, which were (intentionally) felled toward the same area …<\/p>\n\n\n

… will have to wait for another time, be it before the first snowfall, or next year after the snow melts and the water drains!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
